"Australia: The Simple Guide to GST for Freelancers"

"Everything you need to know about the 10% Goods and Services Tax and your ABN requirements."

GST Down Under: Keeping it Simple

Compared to the US or Canada, Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) system is refreshingly simple: it's almost always a flat 10%.

When to Register?

You must register for GST if your turnover exceeds $75,000 AUD. Once registered, you must add 10% to your fees.

Tax Invoices: The Rules

To be valid, your invoice must contain: 1. The words "Tax Invoice". 2. Your Australian Business Number (ABN). 3. The date of issue. 4. A breakdown of the GST component (or a statement that "Total price includes GST").

How SparkyMinis Handles It 🇦🇺

1. ABN Integration

  • Go to: `Dashboard > Settings > Business Profile`.
  • Enter your ABN.
  • SparkyMinis automatically switches the document title from "Invoice" to "Tax Invoice" on your PDFs, keeping you compliant with ATO standards.
  • 2. The Global Default

    Since the rate is uniform:
  • Set `GST 10%` as your Default Tax Rate in `Settings > Tax & Compliance`.
  • It will now auto-apply to every new line item you create, saving you clicks.
  • 3. BAS Reporting

When it's time for your Business Activity Statement (BAS):
  • Go to `Dashboard > Business > Reports`.
  • See your `Total Sales` (G1) and `GST Collected` (1A) instantly, ready to copy-paste into the ATO portal.
  • Set Up Your Aussie Tax Profile →
